The diversity of the climate of this region, in combination with the remarkable hypsometric differences and the intense alternation of the morphology of the land and the bas-relief, encourage the growth of appreciable, rich and, on certain occasions, infrequent species of flora and fauna.
The forests create landscapes of exceptional beauty with the alternation of the colors that they present at the Autumn. Characteristic species of these forests are the koumaria, the laurel, the fraxos, the koutsoupia, the kokorevithi and the oaks.
The fauna of the region shows a particular interest as it houses scarce and protected species of vertebrate and invertebrate animals. This variety, in combination with the presence of enough infrequent species of birds, had as result the integration of departments of the wider region in the net of protected regions Natura 2000.
